Symposia by SARAS


SARAS plans to organize a series of large symposia with well-known, inspiring speakers around important themes that will attract participants from natural and social sciences and humanities. Here is a preliminary list of topics for the series.


  1. Future scenarios for South America. This will include artists and writers together with social and natural scientists. It will be combined with a lasting BLOG and we will involve the media from the beginning. It will set the stage of many of the other symposium issues.
  2. Consequences of climate change in South America. Predictions (including tipping points in Amazonia and altered ENSO) and social and ecological consequences.
  3. Diversity loss in South America. Focussed on causes and consequences of losing both biological and cultural diversity (including languages, indigenous cultural worldviews and landscapes), and the relationship between the two.
