SARAS in a nutshell

SARAS is an interdisciplinary research institute designed to catalyze high impact science that serves to enhance the region's long term resilience and sustainable development. The SARAS building will be located at the coast of Uruguay. Rather than having a permanent scientific staff it will provide facilities for workshops, courses and sabbaticals. It will be a Foundation, led by a Board of Trustees and a Science Board.



Vision Statement

SARAS is a place where paradigm shifts in thinking about resilience and sustainable futures are triggered. In its atmosphere brilliant minds find peace to think deeply. At the same time, the kind and intense interaction at SARAS shapes a new generation of broad visionary scientists. While it is respected for its cutting edge science, SARAS is also be known for its remarkable capacity to link the powers of science and arts to policy.


Start-up activities

In order to boost visibility and build a wide network of people involved SARAS will:
  1. Organize a series of large symposia with well-known, inspiring speakers around important themes that would attract participants from natural and social sciences and humanities.
  2. Host courses offered by partner institutions such as Wageningen University, The Stockholm Resilience Institute, the Resilience Alliance, the Santa Fe institute.
  3. Facilitate a few initial workshops involving influential scientists working on key issues to produce highly visible publications.
